Interview with Alice, Apprentice Vehicle Technician at Rivervale
At Rivervale, the service team is much more than just a group of technicians; it feels like a close-knit family.
Alice, an apprentice vehicle technician, is a vital part of that family. Her journey at Rivervale has been nothing short of transformative. When she first arrived, she was primarily assisting with basic tasks. Fast forward to today, and she's confidently taking on maintenance tasks independently. "I've grown loads since I started," she says.
The automotive industry has long been seen as a predominantly male domain, and Alice is well aware of the stereotypes that can discourage women from pursuing a career in vehicle maintenance. When asked what advice she'd give to other women thinking about a career as a vehicle technician, her response is simple yet powerful: "Do it, show them."
From passing her driving test in January 2024 to now working on luxury vehicles, she admits the jump feels surreal at times. “Driving [and working on] premium cars feels like a massive step up, but I'm really proud of how far I've come,” she says.
Talking to Alice, it's immediately apparent that her passion for cars goes far beyond the 9-5 grind. Her favourite car that she's driven so far? A Bentley Flying Spur. The sparkle in her eyes is hard to miss as she recounts her experience behind the wheel of such a prestigious vehicle.
But her passion doesn't stop at driving premium cars. She has her sights set on something a bit more personal—a 1990 Mazda MX-5, a car she dreams of buying and restoring as her own project.
When it comes to advice for aspiring technicians, Alice is straightforward: "Get experience in the trade—anything will help." Even if it's tinkering with an engine in your spare time or shadowing a professional in a workshop, Alice believes that hands-on experience is key "Develop an interest for it," she says earnestly. "It's not just about learning the theory; you have to really want to get stuck in."
Are you looking to break into the motor trade? It's beneficial to research apprenticeship opportunities, many of which can be found through industry bodies, local garages, or specialised programmes such as the BOSCH Automotive Apprenticeship Programme.
This scheme provides structured, in-depth training, combining hands-on work with expert guidance, helping apprentices develop essential skills across vehicle maintenance and repair.
What makes BOSCH's programme stand out is its balance of practical experience and industry-recognised qualifications, offering a strong foundation for those entering the trade.
Alice's journey has had its fair share of challenges, but she's always risen to the occasion. One of her most impressive accomplishments? Taking apart and reassembling an entire engine from a MAXUS Deliver 9.
It's the kind of task that might intimidate even seasoned technicians, but Alice tackled it with determination. "Taking out the whole engine, pulling it apart, and putting it all back together—it was intense, but it's what I love about the job," she reflects.
There's no doubt that Alice is more than capable of holding her own in a traditionally male-dominated workshop. Her enthusiasm is infectious, her skills are sharpening by the day, and her passion for the craft is undeniable.
As her journey continues, there's no telling just how far she'll go. But one thing is for sure—Alice is not just another apprentice. She's a force to be reckoned with, an inspiration for others, and a testament to what can be achieved when you combine passion, perseverance, and a love for the trade.
